How Long Does It Take to Roof a House

How long does it take to roof a house? The answer is a few days to a few weeks because there are many factors to consider. The type of material you use, the condition of your existing roof, and the skill of the roofing crews all play a role here.

So, get comfortable for a few minutes while the Lagunas Roofing team answers this question in more detail.

How Long Does It Take to Roof a House for the Average Family?

Weather permitting, it’s possible to replace a roof on homes under 3,000 square feet in a day. This could extend to three to five days in less than ideal conditions. Set aside three weeks if you have a home with limited accessibility or a complex design.

The following factors influence the timeline.

Design

By this, we mean the complexity of the design. How many angles are there? Is the roof flat, or are there several planes? The more design features you incorporate, the longer it will take to install the roof.

Under design, we must also consider the safety precautions necessary. The height of a two-story home makes it more dangerous than a one-story one. The roofer will need to take a little more time to work safely in this case.

Accessibility

Accessibility plays a significant role in how quickly your contractor can work. If you have a breathtaking home overlooking a cliff, getting the old roofing materials off it and into the trash may take longer.

Landscaping, fences, paved surfaces, and shrubbery are all examples of things that might block access.

The Weather

When you replace your roof, the weather cannot be too hot, too cold, raining, or freezing. After rain or snow, you need to wait until the roof is thoroughly dry. If you try to rush this process, your roof will likely leak or have other faults.

The Season

During spring and summer, roofers can work for more hours in the day. Therefore, theoretically, they should be able to complete the homes more quickly. Unfortunately, these times are also the busiest of the year, so you need to book early.

In winter, roofers face time constraints. It’s not safe to work at night, so few contractors will do so. If you’re looking at a cold-weather installation, factor in an extra day to compensate for the failing light.

The Roofing Materials

The materials you use will also impact the timeline. For example, a metal roof that you can lay in a single sheet is faster to install than individual synthetic slate shingles. Here is the installation time for other materials:

  • Asphalt shingles take between one and three days
  • Wooden shingles take between six and eight days
  • Slate tiles take between six and seven days
  • Concrete tiles take between eight and nine days

The Damage to Your Roof

The condition of the underlying foundational layer or the roof beams also impacts the timeline. If your roof's foundation is in good shape, it’s easy to replace the roof. If not, you’ll need to shore up or possibly replace weaker beams.

Unfortunately, this may only become apparent when you start removing the shingles.

Faster Doesn’t Mean Better

In the roofing trade, some installers work a lot faster than average. Be wary with such contractors because they may:

  • Cut corners to speed up the work
  • Use a large team of installers that get in each other's way
  • Slack off when it comes to cleaning
  • Provide shoddy work to save time

To err on the side of caution, stick to reputable companies with extensive industry experience. Get a couple of quotes for the replacement and ask them to give you a completion date. By comparing the estimates, you can better gauge if a contractor is taking shortcuts.
