National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows is a Roman Catholic church and shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located in Belleville, Illinois, United States. The Shrine is part of the Diocese of Belleville and is the largest outdoor Marian shrine in North America.

History

The Shrine was founded in January 1938 by Archbishop John J. Glennon, who had the dream of building a shrine to Mary, Mother of God, in the United States. In December 1939, the Shrine was officially dedicated by Archbishop Glennon.

The first shrine on the site was a small wooden structure built in 1940. In 1955, construction began on the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, which was completed in 1956. The Basilica was designed by architect E. M. Statler, who also designed the original Shrine.
