Signs You Need Roofing Services: How to Identify Roofing Issues

June 6, 2023

The roof of a home plays many roles. Not only does it add to the overall curb appeal of a house, but it is also responsible for protecting the interior from the elements. It can even impact a home’s energy efficiency. For all of those reasons and more, it’s important that homeowners look out for signs that their roofs need repair or a replacement.

Unfortunately, most homeowners are only familiar with the more obvious signs of damage. They fail to recognize some of the more subtle signs that their roof is deteriorating. However, the professionals of Lagunas Roofing have used their experience to put together this helpful list of signs that a home needs
roofing services in St. Louis

Leaks and Water Damage

One of the most obvious signs that a roof needs a repair or replacement is water leaking inside the home. However, it may not be noticeable immediately if the homeowner doesn’t check the attic area regularly. Even homes without an attic may not have visible signs right away. Homeowners will have to look for stains, bubbling, cracking, or peeling paint, or mold growth.

It’s important to take leaks seriously, even if they appear minor. Over time, they can lead to mold problems and structural issues caused by rot. Leaks typically require a replacement, but they may also need mold remediation as well.

Sagging Roof Structure

Homeowners can also check on the condition of their roofs from the outside. If the roof is obviously sagging, that means there is a structural problem happening. In most cases, this occurs when moisture has become trapped inside the roof. Eventually, it leads to rotting, which compromises the structural integrity of the entire roof.

Unfortunately, this is not a simple repair that can be made. This type of problem will require an entire roof system replacement.

Damaged or Missing Shingled

As a home’s roof ages, it’s not uncommon for it to lose a shingle or two. They can easily become damaged from exposure to the elements over time. However, homeowners should contact a roofer when they notice signs of damaged or missing shingles. The contractors may be able to repair them without a complete replacement. This will help to extend the life of the roof.

Damaged Roof Flashing

Roof flashing is installed to redirect water away from holes cut for the chimney, vents, etc. Without it, water would leak in and start rotting the roof and interior. Since it plays such a vital role in protecting the home, it needs to be repaired right away if it’s damaged. Unfortunately, the damage can’t be spotted from the ground, so homeowners will need to check the roof themselves or hire a roofer for an inspection

Daylight Visible in the Attic

Homeowners can also check for roof damage by going into the attic and checking for sunlight. The easiest way to do this is by turning off all of the lights and going up during the middle of a sunny day. If there are any beams of light visible from the roof, that indicates that there is a hole that needs to be repaired.

Granules Accumulating in Gutter Systems

Gutters should be routinely cleaned, so it’s a great opportunity for homeowners to check on the condition of their roofs. If there are small amounts of asphalt granules from the shingles, there’s no immediate cause for alarm. However, larger piles of granules indicate that the aging roof may need to be replaced.

Pests Living in the Attic

Finally, homeowners should be concerned that the structural integrity of their roof has been compromised if they notice that they have animals in their attic. Birds, mice, bats, squirrels, and chipmunks may find their way inside through holes. Larger damage may even make room for raccoons or opossums. If animals are found, an exterminator will need to be called, and the roof will need to be repaired or replaced.
